For freelancers

Intelligent expense tracking built for freelancers

Freelance income arrives in bursts and expenses hide everywhere. 2Fin pulls it all together, sorts spending automatically, and surfaces the write-offs you'd miss — so you always know what's yours to keep and what to set aside for tax.

What Fin does for you

See income and expenses clearly

Irregular pay and scattered costs become one clear picture — what came in, what went out, and what it means for your bottom line.

Catch the write-offs you forget

Software, gear, co-working, courses, that domain renewal — deductible expenses are surfaced from your real spending so nothing slips through.

Know who still owes you

Invoice from whatever you like — your accounting app, Stripe or a PDF template. Each invoice you record or upload sits on Upcoming until the client pays, then Fin matches the payment and counts it as income. Connect your assistant and it can draft the next one in your own tool.

Know what to set aside for tax

Stay ahead of tax time with a running view of your deductible spend, so a tax bill never catches you off guard.

The laptop and the phone: what you claim now, what you claim over time

A new laptop and a new phone in the same year are two kinds of claim. The GST inside each price is a credit on this quarter’s activity statement; the cost itself is written off over the asset’s effective life — two years for a laptop under the 2025 determination — unless the write-off rules apply. Add either from its bank transaction and the asset register runs the schedule.

Did you know?

Australia's first income tax was a state tax: South Australia levied one in 1884, the Commonwealth followed in 1915 to pay for the First World War, and in 1942 Canberra took over income tax from the states altogether.

Wikipedia records that 'the first income tax in Australia was imposed in 1884 by South Australia', that federal income tax 'was first introduced in 1915, as a wartime measure', and that in 1942 the federal government took over the raising of all income tax 'to the exclusion of the States' — an arrangement that still stands.

Switzerland taxes income three times over — by the Confederation, the canton and the commune — and each canton sets its own rates, so in one comparison the top rate ranged from 12.3% in Zug to 32.3% in Jura.

Wikipedia: taxes are 'levied by the Swiss Confederation, the cantons and the municipalities'; the federal direct tax tops out at 'the maximum rate of 11.5%'; cantons 'remain free to set their tax rates', and Zug had the lowest maximum individual rate among major cities at 12.3% against 32.3% in Jura (2011 figures); cantons also levy a wealth tax of roughly 0.3% to 0.5% on net worth.

Freelancers — common questions

Can I track expenses across different clients?

Yes. Your spending is organised so you can see costs clearly and keep client-related expenses tidy, all in one place.

Does it help freelancers with tax?

It surfaces deductible expenses from your actual transactions and keeps them categorised, so preparing your return is far quicker. 2Fin helps you find and organise potential deductions; always confirm what applies to you with your accountant or tax authority.

Do I need accounting experience to use it?

No. The categorising is done for you and explained in plain language — if you can read a bank statement, you can use 2Fin.

I bought a laptop and a phone this year — do I claim them all at once?

Two answers, because two taxes. The GST in each price is claimed in full on the activity statement for the quarter you bought them. For income tax the cost is spread over the effective life — two years for a laptop — unless the asset qualifies for an immediate write-off, whose limit for the current year you should confirm with the ATO. If you use either privately as well, only the business share is deductible. The asset register in 2Fin keeps both halves on the one bank transaction. 2Fin helps you find and organise potential deductions; always confirm what applies to you with your accountant or tax authority.
