Tax deductions for performing artists & musicians in the UAE

As a performing artist you can generally claim your instruments and equipment, coaching and lessons that maintain your craft, agent commission, and travel to auditions and performances. In the UAE you report it through a corporate tax return if you are in scope, plus VAT returns once registered.

Performing work comes with a broad set of claimable costs — instruments and equipment, the coaching that keeps your craft sharp, agent commission, travel to auditions and rehearsals, and stage costumes. Because the work arrives as short contracts and gigs rather than one steady job, logging each expense against the engagement it belongs to is what makes the full year easy to claim.

The three rules for any claim

  • You paid for it yourself and weren’t reimbursed.
  • It directly relates to earning your income.
  • You have a record — a receipt, invoice or bank statement.

There is no personal income tax in the UAE — salaries and most personal investment income are not taxed. What can apply to someone working for themselves is corporate tax on business profit: the first AED 375,000 of taxable income is at 0% and the excess at 9%.

Specific to performing artists & musicians in the UAE

Rules that apply to this work in the UAE in particular, each from the official page it was checked against on 4 October 2026.

VAT follows where you perform

Under Article 30 of the UAE VAT Decree-Law, the place of supply for cultural, artistic, sporting, educational and similar services is where they are performed. So if you are VAT-registered, a show you give in the UAE generally falls within UAE VAT, while a performance on an overseas tour generally falls outside it. Recording each engagement’s location as you go makes the returns simpler.

Abu Dhabi gigs need a performer permit

In Abu Dhabi, each entertainer or performer at an event generally needs an entertainment permit from the Department of Culture and Tourism, including shows in authorised tourist and commercial restaurants. The organiser usually adds performers to its Events Licensing System application, and only performers named on the approved permit can take part — so sending your details early keeps the booking smooth. Dubai runs its own permit system.

What you can usually claim

These are the costs of doing the work — the same list wherever you are based. How each one is claimed follows the rules in the UAE, set out below.

Instruments and performance equipment

Instruments, amplification, cases and stands used to earn your income, plus repairs, servicing, strings and reeds.

Coaching, lessons and training

Ongoing singing, dance, music or acting tuition that maintains or improves the skills you currently earn from.

Agent and management commission

Commission paid to your agent or manager on income you earn is generally deductible against that income.

Travel to auditions, rehearsals and performances

Travel between engagements, and to auditions and rehearsals, is generally claimable — with the usual limits on ordinary home-to-work travel.

Stage costumes and specific makeup

Costumes and theatrical makeup used in performance, including cleaning and upkeep of them. Conventional clothing and everyday grooming are not claimable.

How the UAE treats them

Vehicle and travel

Business running costs are deductible against business profit where they are incurred wholly for the business; private use is not.

Home workspace

The business-use share of workspace costs is deductible against business profit, on the same wholly-for-business principle.

Equipment and higher-cost gear

Equipment is deducted against business profit following the accounting treatment, with depreciation recognised over the asset’s useful life. Two things happen when you buy higher-cost gear, and they are separate: any GST or VAT credit is claimed on the purchase itself under your local consumption-tax rules, while the cost is spread over the asset’s useful life rather than deducted once. Private use reduces the share you claim each year, not the value you carry. The asset register inside 2Fin tracks both for you; its built-in effective-life list covers Australia today, with other markets following.

This is general information, not personal tax advice — what you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with the Federal Tax Authority or a registered tax adviser, and keep records to back up every claim. Official guidance from Federal Tax Authority →

Keep in mind

  • Everyday clothing, haircuts and grooming, even when appearance matters to the work.
  • Tickets to shows you attend for your own enjoyment.
  • Training aimed at entering a different profession.
  • Two separate systems decide what you owe, each on its own clock. Corporate tax reaches a natural person carrying on business once turnover passes AED 1 million in a calendar year — an annual test. VAT is continuous: registration can be triggered by taxable supplies and imports over the previous 12 months, or by expecting to cross the threshold within the next 30 days, so it is worth watching your rolling total rather than waiting for year end. You can be inside either system, both, or neither.
